Hungary became a member of the European Union in 2004 and officially joined the Schengen Area in 2007 allowing passport-free travel within the Schengen zone for all citizens and national resident permit holders.
Between July 1 and December 31, 2024, Hungary holds the consecutive presidency of the European Union's Council, which gives a more important leading position among the European countries.
